Juventud is food trailer based off of the kid's menu at traditional restaurants. This trailer is intended to be an adult take on the simplicity of the menu itself, as well as childhood. The ultimate goal is that an adult can escape adulthood and be a kid again, but in a modern and sophisticated way.
I was inspired to make a trailer that only serves kid's menu items because of my own personal desire to order from the kid's menu at restaurants. I love what many deem as boring and simple foods. I wanted to create a space in which I could enjoy these foods that restaurants so often deny me due to age restrictions.
In designing, I wanted everything to be extremely clean and simple. I didn't want the trailer to mimic traditional kid's menu cheesiness, but instead went for a modern look. My initial vision of the trailer was black and white, no frills and san-serif type. All of the shapes would be basic and child-like. The colors I chose are muted, to give it a more modern feel, rather than being bold, primary colors.
Juventud is the Spanish word for youth. In brainstorming the name, I came up with plenty of ideas that included kid, child, or youth. But, I didn't want the name to be so explicitly obvious that it was a kid-like theme. Plus, Juventud is extremely fun to say.
When it came to designing the logo and branding, all of my iterations seemed so boring. I personally think the final iteration is even boring. But, that was the point. I eventually came up with this idea of building blocks of sorts, but disguising it as a modern logo. Extending that idea of blocks, I brought the idea into the menu with my colored squares to organize categories of food. You'll notice that the menu does not describe the foods and does not provide prices. This was a conscious design decision. Kids don't like to be bothered with what all the dish entails and how much it costs, so why would these adults? I also included the idea of having crayons and a coloring pad, branded with Juventud's logo. The customer would receive these while waiting for their meal. Their sleek black design gives them a more modern look, while still producing all of the fun traditional crayons would. Also, I designed the kid's cup after the plastic to-go cups that kids get at restaurants because that was always my favorite part of going out to eat: my souvenir cup to take home.
Overall, I am happy with where this design is going. It is still a work in progress, but I have executed this idea to the best of my current ability and look forward to its completion over time.
